Their first work, a 30 minute non stop flying, running & falling, to settled serenity is lead by local band Terra Firma, this year composed for the dancers work titled 'Mankind". A 70 minute programme of full on montage of NZ Art - at its best.
Directed by Catherine Brown.
EVERY STEP Closer to the dream.
September 13th and 14th, Baycourt, Tauranga.
Every Step will go on stage next week at Baycourt featuring the Dance House students. They tell the story of one person’s dream to become a dancer.
Director Catherine Brown says, “The story follows the life of a young dancer and 3 friends as they pursue their dreams. The four main characters share the highs and lows of that journey. They progress from beginner classes to their teen graduation day - Every Step propelling them closer to the dream.
“It is a story comprised of experiences I have seen as a teacher and those I know myself. It takes a dream to begin with, but this never amounts to anything without gritty determination and persistent hard work. There are always obstacles in life, but if we can overcome these, achieving our dreams is possible. As a teacher this is something I want to pass on to my students. It’s more than dance, if a student can own that, it’s not mine anymore - it’s theirs to be Every Step closer to the dream.” explains Catherine. “ This could not be more true for Shinae Taylor, the lead girl in Every Step as she leaves next year to pursue full time study in dance. This has been a nice reminder of what the story is truly about”.
The students pack 91 minutes of exciting and honest storytelling through Ballet, Tap, Jazz, Contemporary dance and Musical Theatre. Janine Gainford, whose last appearance was in Fiddler on the Roof, also performs. ”The students have thrived working on this project, the evidence being in their work. They are just buzzing to bring this production to the stage!” Catherine says. “It is always a challenge to put together a production in which students can showcase their work, especially when there is so many. I feel we have achieved this. The storyline is relative on so many levels and will be hugely entertaining with a rich content of dance to enjoy”.
Every Step staged at Baycourt, will be on Thursday the 13th and Friday the 14th of September starting at 6:30 pm. Tickets through TicketDirect www.ticketdirect.co.nz or at Baycourt Phone 577 7188.
